Statement of Faith

There is one God--the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Yeshua is YHWH revealed in human flesh, born of a virgin, and an incarnation of the one God. Scripture is inspired of God and constitutes the perspicuous and plenary special revelation of God. The covenant with Abraham, given as a Torah to Jacob, and confirmed through Yeshua is one and eternal never to be abrogated by man. Yeshua the Messiah died vicariously on behalf of all sinners, rose from the dead on the third day, and bodily ascended into Heaven.Yeshua will return physically to inaugurate the kingdom of God and will physically reign upon the Earth.

Aged "Detri-Nuts": A Delicacy 18 Years in the Making

The 18-year cicada is about to make its emergence into adulthood. An estimated 50 million of the adult cicadas are expected to grace Chicagoland in a number of weeks. In strict accordance with the Dead Sea Sect's preparation specifications for locusts, the Sander kids have begun the process of harvesting the nutrient benefit of these calorie-packed sources of protein, essential fatty acids (especially Omega 3), B-vitamins, and photolipids. Below is a picture of Elianna taking in her first cicada nymph of the season, relishing the moment.

When asked what her favorite part of eating cicada nymph is, Elianna responded, "They are so juicy, but you have to bite them fast before they start to move in your moth." Below is a picture of Schmuel about to conduct a swift dental removal of a cicada nymph's head.

Schmuel states, "I like the nymphs better than the adults because they taste sweet and are unencumbered by a set of tasteless wings."

“Detri-nuts” is the affectionate term that Mr. Sander uses to describe the cicada nymph. He explains that the 18-year cicada is like a donut because of the calorie saturation and the ratio of fat calories to other calories in the organism. Though they typically eat them in the field, sometimes Mr. Sander and his kids will sauté living “detri-nuts” in an olive-oil, garlic spread. Mr. Sander states, though, that he prefers to eat them “like the good-Lord intended” – uncooked, raw, and literally “dancing on the tip of your tongue.”

Thank you for the recipe, Peter. This will make great tribulation food. Is this what John the Baptist ate in the wilderness?

My grandchildren will enjoy this delicacy just the way your children do. Please provide a link to identification of this species. Or will you provide a "Cicada Seminar" we could attend at the Nature Center, Mr. Sander?

You made me smile this morning. I am very glad God brought you into this world 29 years ago.

kol tuv,
Maureen

Edit alert: please spell check Eliana's comment.

Ok....

I, personally, would have no interest eating insects since (except for, theoretically, the ones with two hind jumping-legs, such as these), whether or not they're kasheir is risky business. I might also have reservations about ingesting them live, but everyone has their comfort level I guess.

That said, the Tzedoqim-Khasidim in Qumran (such as Yokhanan "ha-Matbil" Ben-Zekharyah ha-Kohein, NOT "John the Baptist", "John the Methodist", et. al.) were documented to have consumed similar insects (always locust or grasshopper-like, of course) as part of their diet. In the very scarce environment of Qumran, such sources of protein in conjunction with honey, provided a solid substitutionary diet. With the progressing restoration of Israel today, it's all occurring full circle once again.

Khag Shavuot Sameiakh, Peter!

Hello Andrew,

Thank you for your comment. This post is mostly fictional. My six-year-old son Schmuel is not at a level of vocabularly that includes words such as "unencombered." Yes, the cicadas are expected to emerge soon in Chicago--today or tomorrow. My number was wrong. I stated that 50 million were expected to "grace Chicagoland." The actual number is more in the billions--yum!

There are few, if any, of the 18-year cicadas in the surburbs where I live because most of the area consists of new construction. With the disruption and displacement of the soil that construction entailed, the 18-year cicadas will return gradually over several generations. The kids and I discovered these cicadas in the virginal lands of a Deerfield, IL forest preserve. The kids caught dozens of these immature (nymph) cicadas. We did not eat any; though my kids enjoyed having pictures taken of them pretending to eat them.

Hope you are well,
kol tuv,
PeterS (Tzuriel)

Is this a test or something to see how gullible your readers are? Or to demonstrate how people generally accept what they hear without checking the facts for themselves? If so, you have made your point. I checked out the facts and discovered the following:

Cicadas emerge on a 17 year cycle, not 18 years.

Cicadas are related to leafhoppers, not locusts,

Cicadas are considered edible and are a common meal in some cultures.

Children have been known to eat them raw:

Kids crunch into uncooked cicadas

By Karen Gutierrez
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Forget the breading, the sugar, the curry, the mayo. Real kids eat their cicadas raw.

That's what some are doing in Northern Kentucky, anyway. Call it a case of Too Much Information: News coverage of cicadas has been so abundant that most kids know they are edible.

"We ripped the wings off and the legs. The heads really do fall off when you rip off the legs. Then we popped them in and chewed them up," says Mike Shrock, 15, who lives in south Covington.

This happened on a recent Saturday at a relative's birthday party. Mike and his 9-year-old brother, Ben Cook, plus two friends, decided on the spur of the moment to catch cicadas and eat them.
Ben swallowed his without chewing.

"My friend did it and was kind of freaking out and making faces," Mike says. Mike, however, remained calm.

"It was kind of soft," he says. "The little nubs were still twitching when I put it in."

His mother was not surprised.

"I knew it was only a matter of time," Carol Cook says. "It's a male thing."

How then to explain Lauren Webster?

The 15-year-old from Hebron recently started to eat a raw cicada, then stopped when it stuck in her braces. She had to know what one tasted like.

------

So, Peter, I suspect that you have provided a "shock and awe" presentation, great teacher that you are.

I would not be surprised if Schmuel uses words like "unencumbered." He would pick up vocabulary from his Dad. He probably uses the word "detritivore" all the time!

I think you and your children would be brave enough to eat these creatures raw...but you probably did not since they are not kosher.

Am I right?

Maureen

Maureen,

Yes, it is a 17-year cicada. I was aware of this. Yes! I would not eat a cicada. It is probably not kosher. Thank you for your post.

Anonymous said...

alright...so the weirdness commences.

Oh yes, one question Peter, not at all related to the subject. Where did you get the "Tzuriel" moniker and why?

Thanks,
Andrew

Anonymous said...

Andrew,

I hope Peter does not mind if I answer your question. I asked him the same question one time and this was his answer as to why he chose this screen name:

Tzuriel

tzur = rock

el = God

Tzuri = my rock

hence, Tzuriel = God is My Rock

My legal name is Peter which means "rock."

------

Nothing too mysterious about that. Other things he is saying these days are a bit mystifying!

His true friends will not abandon him. Nor will the Rock of his salvation.

Hello Peter,

This letter seems to be the only way you will communicate with me. You won't talk with me on the phone. You wont talk with me in person. You know I've given you every opportunity. First I would like to state that I was the anonymous poster who said that the terrorists have the right interpretation of the Koran. And I was the poster who quoted from Don Richardson's book "Secrets of the Koran" (Forward by Reza Safa, Author of Inside Islam). And I was the one who had to endure your insulting reply.
Let me make it clear, that my aim was not to argue over interpretations of Islam, but to draw you out so that you would state your position. Thanks for doing so. You show yourself to be in the greatest state of spiritual confusion, and frankly you need deliverance. But that is only possible if you reach out to the God of Israel and seek the assistance of a Pastor gifted in this area. I know one who is a Seventh Day Baptist Pastor.
Yes, you are angry at God and angry with your wife. Trust me though. Your foremost problem is with God and not your wife, which is why I will not say a word to you about that. The wife problem is a result of your doubting relationship with God. She was only the catalyst, and not the cause. You were the cause. I know you want to divorce her, but she does not want a divorce. She is willing to change. Are you? You will have to get right with the God of Israel. You will have to accept his TEST OF YOUR FAITH, ADMIT FAILURE, and ask for FORGIVENESS, and recommit your LIFE to the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
You have to stop hiding Peter. I am not going to let you hide anymore, at least not from those I can talk to. If you feel ashamed at this public rebuke, believe me, it is nothing compared to the shame that you will feel from God if you keep going on the course you have set.
Now let's get down to business. You are still posting on your blog, and you still have a statement of faith up. So let's start with being honest. In my opinion you no longer believe the things in your statement of faith and as an honorable man you should take it down:

Hello!

Thank you for your replies.

I no longer am able to stand behind what I post on my blog. I do not accept the idea that Isa is God. I have a hard time accepting the idea that the Bible is the uncorrupted Word of God as I see many layers of development and authorship in the texts. I provided the link to my blog simply to give you a peak into who I am.

I have been to your blog a number of times. I will check it in more depth, and I look forward to hearing more from you.

Salam,
Peter.

Hello Riaz:

Thank you for the books that you make available at the Al-Balaagh site. I am considering Isalm … I am a big-time fan of Tolu-e-Islam …
********************

The main reason I wanted to talk to you was to explain these statements. I told you that there would be a one sided default if you did not respond. They are totally inconsistent with the statement of faith you have.

So please fess up that your statement of belief is just as much a spoof as the cicada tale about the kids.

The Torah says "Rebuke your neighbor frankly so you will not share in his guilt" (Lev. 19:17.

The question becomes what is a true friend? Is a true friend the man who will let his brother fall and not reach down with a rope and help pull him out? Certainly not. A friend means well, even when he hurts you (Prov 27:6) and a true friend gives an honest answer (prov 24:26). I don’t believe any of Peter’s friends are out to abandon him during this trial, rather are anxious and fearful of the path he is sliding down. But Peter, it does sound like you are pushing your true friends away as to avoid accountability.
I would like to join you, Maureen, Dan and Andrew in fervent prayer for Peter and for his children and marriage.

Dear Peter,

This is my second open letter to you. I don't know if you read the first yet, but I sent a copy in email also. I see that you have a different profile and link to another blog in your response to my anonymous post. The link is: http://daat-erwat.blogspot.com/. I think all your readers should know about it so that they can see that your thinking is not settled and that it is in fact in the process of radical change. This is hardly evidence of a well thought out position or logical arguments. It is evidence of spiritual confusion and psychological pathology.

This is quite the blog.
Is everyone in here followers of Yeshua as The Messiah? Or is this more just a mix of something else altogether?
Not to sound like an infidel (which I must say seems quite inappropriate to be using) but I’m lacking understanding as to why prayer needs to be taught. This is an honest question that I’m asking and by no means am trying to be insulting. From my understanding, God tells us to pray without ceasing – meaning that it is a lifestyle. No one ever taught David how to pray. While I believe Hebrew to be the divine language, I also believe that the Almighty understands the prayers lifted up to Him regardless of which language they are spoken in. Help me understand where you’re coming from.
With regards to all the comments made about Islam, I find it all a bit confusing. Is the belief that is being held in here that Allah and YHWH are one and the same? I went a few months ago to a film called God and Allah need to talk. It was interesting how so many different faiths came together, even to include interdenominational Passover seders, however, such a thing seemed quite new age, at least in the manner that it was presented.
I personally do not believe that Allah and YHWH are one and the same, regardless if linguistically ‘Allah’ is the equivalent to God and regardless if the claim is being held that Allah is the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. The line doesn’t travel through Ishmael and the prophet Mohammad is relatively new in comparison.
As far as all the chaos within the ‘messianic movement’ (which by the way, I really dislike the title) over things like when to keep Shavuot, rabbinic calendar vs. kararite calendar, etc., I guess I just believe that we are living in the end times and things like issues over the calendar YHWH will restore. Perhaps some of the chaos has been ‘allowed’ by our Heavenly Father as a means to test His children and know who really is faithful…who really is seeking to do His perfect will with all of their heart, mind and strength.
A couple of years back I went to check out a bible college I was interested in over in Colorado. When I sat down to meet with a couple of the faculty and discuss Torah and what they had to offer (they did keep Torah by the way) – I found that from their own study the dismissed all of Scripture, not just some books from the Brit Hadashah, but the majority of the TaNaK as well. In addition there was a bitterness and legalism that I found quite alarming. I’ve since held to the belief that any portion of scripture that appears to contradict one another is the result of 1 of 2 things: translation error or error of interpretation. I try to be careful as a result before studying the Word, to pray for His discernment and wisdom and that He would really speak to my heart.
With regards to the Sacred Name, I disagree that it is against Torah to speak the name of YHWH. Torah doesn’t say that. It does say such things as not to swear falsely by His Name, I mean why would He even say that if you were never to speak His name. I guess I just don’t understand that comment either, especially considering the history of how that interpretation came into play.

I saw the blog link. Doesn't Agnostic theist and freethinker really mean unable to have or walk in any kind of true faith? I don't understand why everything must come down to head knowledge when our understanding, our thoughts, our ways will never be as high as HIS? At what point did you no longer know that there was and is a God? Your purpose statment reads: "My primary goal is to provide objective, impartial review of the Judeo-Christian-Islamic scriptural tradition(s). I will address scriptural difficulties related to concepts of morality, intersections between scriptures and science, redactive developments, and textual drift." Sometimes I think we all most easily fall away as a result of not spending enough time really seeking His face. I am not saying this is true of you, juat making a general statment. I will be keeping you in my prayers. YHWH be with you, Peter.

What's happened to you, Peter? why do you write:

"Beware of Me

“Spiritually confused,” “possessor of a psychological pathology,” “performer of pernicious perfidy,” “demoniac” …. such terms, and others, have been used to describe me lately. I do not seek to redress these and other claims about my belief system or behaviors. You may read as many of these and other claims on my initial blog: http://ahavat-shalom-uchesed.blogspot.com/ as you like. You can believe whatever it is that you want to about me. I have no burden to boot these and other blemishes from my record.

I am being asked to define my position on a number of issues. I will make this post brief. I will list ideas that I accept with confidence that disagree with fundamentalist readings of the Bible. Again, these are my beliefs that contradict the Bible. I give a brief description of each statement.

-- naturalistic evolution: evolution is a non-theistic (though possibly theonomic) theory that explains the fact that life has changed over the last several hundred million years as evidenced in the fossil record, biological geography, genetic relationships, homology, etc.

-- heliocentric solar system: the Bible presents a geocentric solar system with a flat earth covered by a vaulted dome over which is a vast sea. I believe in a heliocentric (sun-centered) solar system.

-- 4.5 billion year-old earth: Bible chronology suggests that the earth is less than 10,000 years old while the evidence from the natural world demonstrates that the Earth is approximately 4.5 billion years old.

-- evolutionary anthropology and psychology: archeology, paleontology, paleo-biology, and multiple other disciplines have convinced me that modern humans are descended from primate ancestors. There was no historical Adam.

-- biblical errancy: The Bible presents multiple errors with respect to physical realities as known through the physical sciences and archeology. Internal contradictions also occur in the Bible. Often these contradictions are the result of multiple layers of authorship and divergent schools of understanding.

-- biblical exclusivity: I do not consider the Bible to be the only inspired written revelation from God. I also consider the Qur’an to be inspired in a sense similar if not completely comparable to the Bible. Both contain errors and moral blunders, yet both are the fruits of a genuine human encounter with God.

-- YHWH is a tribal God: the god of Israel began as a tribal deity who delivered an ethnocentric call to monolatry. This call later evolved into a monotheism as evidenced in the shift from YHWH to “Adonai.”

It is likely that I will add more to this as time permits. But, so that you know for yourself that I am dangerous, I am posting this for any and all to read."

Peter,
Knowing you as a deep thinker, and an honest seeker, I thought you'd appreciate this link to a wonderful article. No, I am not the author of control-z.com, just a friend from your past who knows your passion for truth.
